China Reports 181 New SARS Cases, Nine More Deaths

BEIJING (Reuters) - China said on Saturday nine more people had died from SARS and another 181 were infected, taking the death toll to 190 and the number of cases to more than 3,971.

The Health Ministry said five of the new deaths were in Beijing, currently the hardest hit place in the world, along with 114 of the latest cases.

Hong Kong Reports Nine More SARS Deaths

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong's government said on Saturday the SARS virus had killed another nine people in the territory and infected 10 others.

The latest figures bring the local death toll from Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome to 179 and the total number of cases to 1,621, according to a government statement read out on local Cable TV.

Of these, another 20 patients have recovered, bringing the total number of discharged patients to 898.

The flu-like disease, which is widely believed to have originated in southern China, hit Hong Kong in March and has been spread around the world by travelers.

SARS cases triple in Taiwan

Taiwan's President Chen Shui-bian has decided to put off state visits to four Central American and Carribbean allies for fear the SARS epidemic on the island may worsen.

The number of cases of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome in Taiwan has tripled in the past 10 days, to 102.

Seven people have died .

Meanwhile, China has approved the dispatch of a team of experts from the World Health Organisation to Taiwan to check on the spread of SARS.

Taiwan is not a member of the WHO, but China is a member and regards Taiwan as a renegade province.
